Alabama -Band

Alabama is a legendary American country music band from Fort Payne, Alabama, formed in 1969. Randy Owen and his cousin Teddy Gentry started the group, and their cousin Jeff Cook soon joined them. The band first performed as Wildcountry and spent the early 1970s touring bars across the Southeast. They built their sound on the road and developed a loyal following. In 1977, they changed their name to Alabama. After two breakout singles, RCA Records offered them a major recording deal.

The 1980s launched Alabama into country music superstardom. The band scored more than 27 number‑one hits, seven multi‑platinum albums, and a long list of awards. Their first RCA single, “Tennessee River,” kicked off a streak of 21 straight number‑one songs. Fans embraced classics like “Love in the First Degree,” “Mountain Music,” “Dixieland Delight,” “If You’re Gonna Play in Texas,” and “Song of the South.” Even as trends shifted in the 1990s, Alabama continued releasing hit singles and selling multi‑platinum albums. After a farewell tour in 2004, they reunited in 2010 and still record and tour around the world.

Alabama’s sound blends traditional country, Southern rock, bluegrass, folk, and pop. This mix helped them reach a wide audience and reshape modern country music. Their live shows, packed with rock‑style production and high energy, set a new standard for country concerts. With more than 41 number‑one Billboard country hits and over 75 million albums sold, Alabama stands as the most successful band in country music history. AllMusic credits them with popularizing the modern country band format and notes that few groups are likely to match their influence.

The band’s legacy continues to earn major recognition. Alabama entered the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2005. In 2019, they joined the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum and received its first‑ever Lifetime Achievement Award.
