Carrie Underwood is an American country singer born on March 10, 1983. She became famous after winning American Idol in 2005. Her debut single, “Inside Your Heaven,” made her the first country artist to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also the only solo country song to hit number one on the Hot 100 in the 2000s.
Her debut album, Some Hearts, arrived in 2005. Hits like “Jesus, Take the Wheel” and “Before He Cheats” pushed it to record‑breaking success. It became the best‑selling solo female debut in country music history. The album earned her three Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist.
Her second album, Carnival Ride (2007), had one of the biggest opening weeks ever for a female artist. It won two more Grammys. Her third album, Play On (2009), featured “Cowboy Casanova,” which made one of the biggest jumps on the Hot 100.
In 2012, she released Blown Away. It became the second best‑selling album by a woman that year and earned another Grammy. Her 2014 compilation, Greatest Hits: Decade #1, produced the crossover hit “Something in the Water.” In 2015, Storyteller made her the only country artist to have their first five albums debut in the top two on the Billboard 200.
Her sixth album, Cry Pretty (2018), set more records. She became the only woman to top the Billboard 200 with four country albums. It also delivered the biggest opening week for any female artist that year. She later released My Gift (2020) and My Savior (2021). In 2022, she returned to her country‑pop roots with Denim & Rhinestones.
Carrie Underwood has sold more than 85 million records worldwide. She is the highest‑certified female country artist of all time. She also holds the record for the most number‑one songs by a female artist on the Billboard Country Airplay chart, with 16 chart‑toppers.
Her awards include eight Grammys, 12 Billboard Music Awards, 17 American Music Awards, and five Guinness World Records. She is a member of the Grand Ole Opry and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Billboard named her the top female country artist of both the 2000s and 2010s. Rolling Stone called her “the female vocalist of her generation.” Time listed her among the 100 most influential people in the world. Forbes named her the most successful American Idol winner.
