Three cousins from Fort Payne, Alabama, proved a self-contained band could rule country music. Before them, country stars were solo singers with hired players. After them, everyone wanted a band. Here’s the story of Alabama, from our guide to country music artists.

How Alabama started

Randy Owen and his cousin Teddy Gentry started playing together as teenagers. Their cousin Jeff Cook joined, and in 1969 they formed a band called Wildcountry. Yes, really. They spent the 1970s playing bars in the Southeast, most famously the Bowery in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, writing their own songs between covers.

Becoming Alabama

They changed their name to Alabama in 1977. After two independent singles caught on, RCA signed them, and “Tennessee River” (1980) started a run of 21 straight No. 1 singles.

The '80s kings

Alabama won CMA Entertainer of the Year three years running (1982–1984) and the ACM named them Artist of the Decade for the 1980s. They mixed country with Southern rock, pop and bluegrass, and filled arenas like a rock band.

Farewell and return

After a farewell tour ending in 2004, they reunited in 2010 and returned to touring. Jeff Cook died in 2022.
