The group traces its roots to a gospel quartet that sang for workers at Oak Ridge, Tennessee in the 1940s. The classic lineup came together in the 1970s and moved into country, keeping the four-part harmonies and gospel spirit.
“Elvira” (1981) crossed over to pop radio, and Richard Sterban’s “oom papa mow mow” became one of the most famous bass lines in music. Hits like “Bobbie Sue” and “Thank God for Kids” followed.
Tenor Joe Bonsall retired from touring in early 2024 and died later that year. The group launched a farewell tour in 2023. [VERIFY: current touring status, oakridgeboys.com]
