The band formed in Southern California in the mid-’60s, playing old-time and folk music with a rock attitude. Their cover of Jerry Jeff Walker’s “Mr. Bojangles” became a pop hit in 1970.
In 1972 they went to Nashville and recorded with heroes like Roy Acuff, Mother Maybelle Carter, Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson. Will the Circle Be Unbroken introduced a generation of young rock fans to traditional country and bluegrass, and it’s now preserved in the Library of Congress National Recording Registry.
In the 1980s they had a run of country radio hits, led by the summer anthem “Fishin’ in the Dark” (1987).
